A group of young partygoers on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia have narrowly escaped injury after an illegal fireworks display went wrong.
In the footage, seen in the video below, a girl is seen leaning down, match in hand, with her face directly on top of a lit firework.
Nothing but rubber thongs on foot, a man kicks the illegal sparkler, sending sparks shooting towards his friends as the youths retreat just in time.
The act has left paramedics fuming, who say it’s sheer luck nobody was hurt.
“Injuries to your face, to your hands, to your airways can not only be disfiguring and devastating they can also be life threatening and people can die,” Intensive Care Paramedic Stacey Solomou told 7NEWS.
‘Move your f****** face’
In a separate incident, two men in Sydney were hospitalised after they leaned over the rocket before it exploded in their face.
“Move your face, move your f****** face,” someone is heard yelling before the sparkler explodes.
While emergency crews say they will always attend to help, they’d rather not have to.
“While ambulances are responding to homemade firework injuries, they’re not available to respond to true life threatening emergencies,” Solomou said.
If you are caught with illegal fireworks in South Australia you’ll face a maximum fine of $5,000 but if you do still have any left from the New Year you can hand them into your local police station to be safely destroyed without facing any consequences.
