Xabi Alonso to coach Gladbach: report

Spain’s former European and World Cup-winning midfielder Xabi Alonso is set to be named the next coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach, according to German media reports.

Alonso, 39, will replace Marco Rose at the Bundesliga club when the Austrian switches to Borussia Dortmund, the Bild newspaper and Sport Bild magazine said.

Club spokesperson Markus Aretz said Gladbach would not comment on the report but would reveal news when there was something to reveal.

And according to Spanish sports paper Marca the deal was not yet complete as it said Alonso’s circles would neither confirm nor deny the move.

German magazine Kicker also reported Gladbach had not finally settled on their new coach.

Gladbach ended a long winless streak at Schalke on Saturday after the team lost form following Rose’s announcement he would leave.

Alonso has coached the reserves of his first club, Real Sociedad, since 2019 following a glorious playing career.

As a player he won domestic and Champions League titles with Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid along with Euro 2008 and 2012 either side of the 2010 World Cup triumph with Spain.
