Victorian Opposition leader Michael O’Brien set to face leadership challenge

Victoria’s Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien is set to face a leadership challenge.

The spill motion is expected to happen as soon as Tuesday morning and shadow minister Brad Battin is believed to be challenging him for the leadership.

It comes just after a Labor’s crushing state election annihilation of the Liberals in Western Australia.

Daniel Andrews in recovery

On Monday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews revealed the extent of his spinal injury after he slipped and fell on wooden steps last Tuesday.

“I landed flat on my back and hit the steps hard directly below the shoulder blades fracturing at least five ribs and sustaining an acute compression fracture of the T7 vertebra,” Andrews said in a statement.

“These are serious injuries that require me to wear a brace throughout each day except when sleeping.

“I narrowly avoided permanent damage to my spinal cord.”

He will take a leave of absence for at least six weeks and deputy premier James Merlino will take over his duties.
