Unhappy Klopp rants about TV broadcasters

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp issued another angry rant at TV broadcasters and fixture schedulers after the Premier League champions drew 1-1 in controversial circumstances at Brighton.

The German boss also had a go at Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, who recently voted against the five-substitute rule, calling him “selfish”.

Klopp was unhappy after Liverpool were handed the 1230 GMT Saturday kick-off after playing in the Champions League on Wednesday night and got involved in an extraordinary rant with BT Sport interviewer Des Kelly.

“I don’t know how often I have to say it, but you pick the 12.30 kick offs,” Klopp said, taking aim at the broadcasters.

“Between now and December there is one more Wednesday, Saturday. These are difficult times. I am just saying it how it is. Wednesday to Saturday 12.30 is really dangerous.”

The Premier League champions lost James Milner to a hamstring injury in the 74th minute after he had to make a third consecutive start due to an already-large injury crisis.

Liverpool are without Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Thiago Alcantara amongst others.

The Premier League is the only football competition in Europe to not continue the use of five substitutes from the traditional three, which was implemented when the coronavirus pandemic extended last season’s schedule.

Klopp then fired at Wilder, who voted against the five-substitute rule because of the belief it would give an unfair advantage to clubs who had European fixtures.

“When we had the talk between the managers a week ago, it was 15-5 if not 16-4 for five subs. Since then nothing happened,” Klopp explained.

“You need 14 votes but Chris Wilder said I am selfish. I think all the things he said is selfish too. But it was a similar situation for me at Mainz as well.

“It was all about staying in the league, but Sheffield United have three subs and one point if I am right.

“If you can’t do five subs in a game like this, it’s not for tactical reasons.”
