Telstra offers free WiFi and payphone calls once again over Christmas 2020 break

Telstra is once again giving back to Australians by offering free payphones calls and WiFi data in public hotspots for nine days over the Christmas period.

On Monday, the telco announced the initiative in a bid for Australians “a chance to connect with friends and family”.

This is the fifth Christmas the company has provided this ‘Christmas gift’, with the offer running from Christmas Eve until January 1.

It includes free local, national and standard mobile calls and text messages to anyone in Australia.

There will also be free Telstra Air WiFi data from selected public hotspots as well as Telstra stores.

Telstra says that there are over 15,000 payphones still in use around the country, making up 11 million calls every year. 200,000 of these calls were made to emergency services.

“For many, especially vulnerable people like the homeless or those escaping an unsafe family situation, their presence is vital lifeline,” Jackie Coates, Head of Telstra Foundation wrote on the Telstra blog announcing the Christmas offer.

During 2019, almost half a million calls were made for free over the nine day Christmas and New Year period.

“We know this year has been hard because of lockdown and closed borders, and at Christmas, feelings of isolation and loneliness can peak,” Coates writes.

“It’s important that we help in any way we can so that people can have a vital feeling of connection and hope at this time of year.”

For anyone struggling with their mental health to use our payphones to call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.
