Russia’s Andrey Rublev continued his hot streak by winning his 22nd consecutive ATP 500 tour match against American Taylor Fritz at the Dubai Championships.
Rublev, chasing his fifth consecutive title in the high-quality ATP 500 events, cruised to a 6-3 6-1 win against Fritz on Wednesday and next faces Marton Fucsovics after the Hungarian ousted Serbian 11th seed Dusan Lajovic 6-1 4-6 6-4.
Russian second seed Rublev won in Rotterdam two weeks ago and also claimed titles at his final three ATP 500 tournament appearances in 2020, in Hamburg, St Petersburg and Vienna.
Italian 19-year-old Jannik Sinner continued his rise, claiming a notable scalp by beating Spain’s fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 3-6 7-5.
Sinner, the youngest player in the ATP’s top 100, came through in two hours and 25 minutes to set up a last-eight encounter with Aslan Karatsev.
Russian Karatsev, the surprise semi-finalist at last month’s Australian Open, reached his first ATP 500 quarter-final by beating 17th seed Lorenzo Sonego 3-6 6-3 6-4 in another tough three-setter.
Canada’s third seed Denis Shapovalov will play Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in his quarter-final after beating Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-3.
Chardy, world No.53, lost a first-set tiebreak to Karen Khachanov but hit back to beat the eighth seed 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-4.
Kei Nishikori beat Aljaz Bedene 6-4 6-4 and faces South African qualifier Lloyd Harris, who defeated Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
