You’ve probably heard a few good fishing tales before, but this one is unlike any other.
A Sunday outing by two crab fishermen in Darwin took a very odd turn when they discovered a man perching in mangroves, completely naked and very muddy.
The 40-year-old man had been on the run for days after allegedly cutting off his ankle bracelet and evading police.
But then he found himself trapped in a crocodile-infested creek near East Point and had to eat snails to survive.
Cam Faust and Kevin Joiner were checking their crab pots when they heard the man calling out for help.
“Man, what you been doing?” one fisherman asks the naked escapee.
“Where the f*** you been? ‘I’ve been eating snails.’ Ah, I’ll call you an ambulance, hey?
“We’ll cut these pots out ….. Have you got any water there, mate? We got water for you, bro.”
The man was dehydrated and covered in insect bites and cuts.
The trio shared a beer together as they brought the fugitive safely to shore in their boat.
An ambulance was then called and the man was taken to hospital, where he remains under police guard.
NT Police Northern Watch Commander Len Turner confirmed to The NT News that the escapee was a wanted man.
“He was placed into custody and is now at Royal Darwin Hospital being treated for the harsh conditions that he subjected himself to,” Mr Turner said.
“While at large it is alleged he has committed further offences, and for the last few days he’s been avoiding police by hiding out at scrubland in Howard Springs and Palmerston areas.”
While the man was lucky to survive his ordeal, he was perhaps displeased about being caught.
He was due in court on Tuesday.
