NSW community of Stockton ‘heartbroken’ after shooting death of local swimming coach Stacey Klimovitch

A NSW community has been left heartbroken after much-loved local was shot dead after answering a knock at the door.

Stacey Klimovitch was shot in the chest after answering the front door of her Queen Street home in Stockton, outside Newcastle, on Wednesday night.

The 61-year-old died at the scene.

A female relative and her eight-week-old baby were present at the shooting but did not see the offender.

Klimovitch, who was an active member of the community, has been remembered as a “loving mum and swimming coach”.

“The Newcastle and Stockton communities and associated sporting groups are heartbroken to hear about the tragic death of loving Mum and local swimming coach, Stacey Klimovitch,” a GoFundMe organised by the community for her family says.

“Newcastle District Softball Association in conjunction with Wanderers Rugby Club, Strikers Softball Club and Hunter Wildfires Rugby Union are raising funds to contribute to the Klimovitch family.

“We are hoping that by banding together we can cover the cost of Stacey’s funeral.

“The Klimovitch family have been great supporters of sport in the Newcastle area for over 25 years and Stacey has probably taught most of Stockton how to swim!

“On behalf of the softball and rugby union communities, we thank you for any contribution you can offer and hope together we can assist George, Maddie, Steph, Alex and Ethan through this tragic time.”

Police investigation

Klimovitch’s killer is believed to have fled the scene on foot following the shooting.

Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said he believes the attack was targeted, but for a reason that remains unknown.

“It’s horrendous, an innocent person who’s answered the front door of her home and been shot in the chest and killed in the presence of a relative and child,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“It doesn’t get any worse.”

Police are appealing for the public’s help, with anyone with information urged to contact crime stoppers.
