Man City hammer Fiorentina 5-0 in the WCL

Manchester City have stormed into the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals, thrashing Fiorentina 5-0 to earn an aggregate 8-0 triumph.

Gareth Taylor’s side joined Chelsea as England’s representatives in the last eight on Thursday, scoring three times by just past the half-hour mark at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, with Ellen White netting twice, either side of Caroline Weir’s penalty.

Substitute Sam Mewis added a brace of her own after the break as City waltzed home without star players Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze, who were left out of the squad as a precaution.

City will be one of the teams that Australian internationals – Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Lyon’s Ellie Carpenter – will be happy to avoid when the quarter-final draw is made on Friday.
