Japan daily virus cases hit record high

Japan has reported a record 4916 new coronavirus infections, exceeding the 4000-case mark for the second time in six days, as the government considers declaring a state of emergency over the pandemic for Tokyo and its neighbouring regions.

The figure, including 1278 new cases in Tokyo, exceeded the previous single-day record of 4322 new coronavirus cases on New Year’s Eve.

About half of Tuesday’s total were from Tokyo and the prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama as the regions struggle to rein in a severe third wave of the pandemic.

Recent massive spikes prompted the governors of the four prefectures to urge Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s government on Saturday to issue a state of emergency for their regions.
