Temporary visa holders who flout COVID-19 rules and restrictions risk being deported from Australia, the federal government has warned.
Immigration Minister Alex Hawke told Sunrise that anyone who is not a citizen or resident of Australia caught breaching public health orders would be sent packing.
It comes after video of a party of hundreds of revellers held at Sydney’s Bronte Beach on Christmas Day sparked outrage across the country.
It’s understood that a number of the partygoers were international backpackers.
“People across Australia were shocked by these images, especially so long into the pandemic after all the work that Australians have been doing so well together,” Hawke said.
The Minister said he had “asked the Department of Home Affairs to work closely with NSW agencies and officials to identify anybody who has been causing trouble of disobeying public health orders.”
“If they’re a temporary visa holder, we will cancel their visa.”
“This far into the pandemic, there is no excuse at this point,” he said.
“Australians are tired of it and people want to make sure that everyone is doing the right things.”
