Haaland’s return gives Dortmund zest

Norwegian striker Erling Haaland failed to hit the target on his return from injury but proved a threat throughout as Borussia Dortmund edged Wolfsburg 2-0 to return to the Bundesliga’s top four.

Haaland, who had missed the last month of 2020 as Dortmund won just one of five games to slip behind the leading pack, played 81 minutes and twice forced excellent saves from visiting keeper Koen Casteels.

Even without Haaland’s goals, though, Manuel Akanji’s 66th minute header and Jadon Sancho’s late counter-attack strike ended a run of three successive home defeats to take Dortmund fourth, a point above Union Berlin and sixth-placed Wolfsburg.

Under the leadership of interim coach Edin Terzic, Dortmund are now six points behind league leaders RB Leipzig, who won 1-0 at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
