A Florida man who believed COVID-19 was “political” and akin to having the flu has pleaded with people to wear a mask.
A video showing Chuck Stacey, 50, struggling to speak through laboured breathing as he lays in a hospital bed has been posted to Twitter by a friend of his.
“I didn’t wear a mask,” Stacey said, as seen in the video above.
“You don’t want to end up like me.
“I’m having trouble breathing.
“I have to be intubated if I get any worse.
“It’s so hard to breath.”
In May, Stacey reportedly took to social media to criticise people who wore masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic as overreacting.
He also claimed he should be excused from wearing a mask because he suffers from claustrophobia, the New York Post reports.
But he has now conceded his position was wrong.
“I believed this was just the flu, that it was all going to go away, that it was political,” he said.
“I didn’t think a mask would help.
“If wearing a mask can reduce your chances of getting this even by five per cent, just wear a mask.
“Do it for your children, your loved ones.
“Do it for yourself.”
Stacey is one of almost 1.4 million COVID-19 cases in Florida and 21 million nationally.
