Facebook, Instagram block President Donald Trump’s accounts indefinitely

Social media giants Facebook and Instagram have banned Donald Trump’s accounts indefinitely.

The controversial move comes one day after the US President’s supporters stormed the US Capitol building in Washington DC.

Facebook, which owns both social media platforms, said they will prevent Trump from accessing his accounts until the presidential transition is completed later this month.

“We believe the risks of allowing the president to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a statement.

“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.”
