Eden Hills gassing accused Shaun Mate refused bail despite claims of prison assault

An Adelaide father accused of attempting to kill his three-year-old daughter has been bashed and threatened in jail, a court has heard.

Shaun Mate, 43, has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly locked himself in a bedroom at his Eden Hills home with his daughter and a gas tank.

The father-of-two’s wife and other daughter, just six months old, were in the other room at the time.

In the South Australian Supreme Court on Tuesday Mate applied for bail on the grounds he had been subject to physical abuse and verbal threats while in Yatala Labour Prison.

But the prosecution opposed, saying the 43-year-old’s estranged wife fears for the safe of herself and her two children.

They allege that Mate, whose wife had told him earlier that day that their marriage was over, premeditated the alleged gassing.

The court heard that police had been called to the family’s home just hours before the incident but left without intervention.
