COVID-stricken mum Maria Rico took off her oxygen mask to say final goodbye to daughter Anabel Sharma

An elderly woman infected with COVID requested to take her oxygen mask off to say goodbye to her daughter, despite knowing it would bring her closer to death.

Anabel Sharma’s mother Maria Rico, 76, from Leicestershire in the UK died just half an hour after taking her mask off in hospital on November 1.

Anabel, 49, who was also fighting the virus, was in the same hospital as Maria.

After being told she had only two days to live, Maria’s bed was moved so that she could be near her daughter.

Anabel said the final moments of her mother’s life were “heartbreaking” but she was glad her mother didn’t die alone.

“My mum asked them to take her mask off and they said, ‘Once we take this off, that will be it. You won’t have very long’,” she told the BBC.

“She said, ‘Yes, I know that but I’ve had enough’.
