COVID cases in Sydney’s Northern Beaches grows by two, Premier Gladys Berejiklian says

Two new coronavirus cases have been diagnosed in Sydney’s Northern Beaches overnight, Premier Gladys Berejiklian says.

It brings the number of cases found in the area in the past 24 hours to four, with a source of infection eluding officials.

Two mystery cases were reported late on Wednesday afternoon, a couple in their 60s and 70s.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says urgent genomic testing is underway to find the source.

“All that genomic testing is in overdrive at the moment,” she said.

Berejiklian also called for increased testing rates.

“We don’t want to spend the last few days before Christmas anxious or worried about the current set of circumstances.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined Berejiklian at a press conference and said Australians will enjoy a Christmas “very few countries in the world will be able to”.

This is a developing story. More to come.
