Charges laid after teen found dead in Charlestown apartment complex

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a 16-year-old boy in NSW.

The teenager was found unresponsive in a unit on the first floor of a Charlestown unit, in the New South Wales Hunter Region, shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

Detectives working the case found a 24-year-old man at a KFC in Thorton, about half an hour away, and took him into custody.

7NEWS understands the man is a cousin of the child.

He was interviewed on Tuesday and later charged with murder.
