Simona Halep will go to Wimbledon for her title defence without a proper tune-up match on grass as she has withdrawn from next week’s tournament in Bad Homburg.
Organisers of the new event in Germany tweeted on Saturday that Halep had cited ongoing calf muscle problems.
The continuing problem casts a cloud over the world No.3’s defence of her title as the 29-year-old hasn’t played a competitive match since suffering a calf muscle tear last month at the Italian Open, which prompted her to miss the French Open.
The Romanian announced her return 10 days ago after accepting a Bad Homburg wildcard but now can’t play there.
Wimbledon starts on June 28, with 2019 champion Halep the title holder after the 2020 edition was cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
