AUS V IND: Aussies flattened by overturned wicket after ‘unfortunate’ DRS flaw

Australia briefly missed out on dismissing India’s Rohit Sharma when technical shortcomings fell in the tourists’ favour at the SCG on Friday.

The batsman and opening partner Shubman Gill started brightly after Australia were all out for 338 but the stand looked to be over on 61.

Sharma was given out caught at short leg by umpire Paul Wilson before immediately reviewing the decision, arguing he did not get bat or glove on the ball.

But few replays gave third umpire Bruce Oxenford cause to make his final determination.

First the short-leg fielder blocked what may have been the best view of the delivery.

Then a slow-motion angle from down the wicket was too low, missing the moment ball deflected off Sharma.

Indian great Sunil Gavaskar initially blamed Sharma for the wicket, saying the “premeditated lunge down the pitch” was a recurring feature of his game.

Gavaskar soon changed his tune as replays failed to come up with the goods.

“I think the batsman immediately asked for a review. Batsmen generally know,” he said on Channel 7.

Former Australian batsman Michael Slater eventually came around but one final look from the opposite side baffled the commentary team.

“Isn’t this angle the wrong side to look for hotspots on the glove?” Alison Mitchell said.

Slater agreed: “Yeah, it’s the wrong side, isn’t it?”

Revered former umpire Simon Taufel said afterwards “it was unfortunate” that technology introduced for the Decision Review System “really didn’t help Bruce (Oxenford) in any conclusive way”.

“This is why we still want the on-field umpires making decisions,” he said.

Sharma’s life didn’t last long, however.

The 33-year-old added just two runs to his total before he was out on 26, caught and bowled by birthday boy Josh Hazlewood.

The dismissal, reducing India to 1-70, was the 30-year-old Hazlewood’s 300th international wicket.
